Casillas candidate for the presidency of the Spanish Federation

The former legendary Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper, who is now part of Porto’s Iker Casillas, is expected to be Luis Rubiales’ rival in the upcoming election of the president of the Spanish Football Federation.

Iker Casillas, who is still pursuing his career as a professional footballer, would have to retire from his successful career if he wants to become the new president of the Spanish Football Federation.

According to Spanish newspaper El Larguero, Casillas has already made known to the responsible authorities, such as the National Sports Council, his decision to run for president of the Federation.

The 38-year-old has also met with many of his former national teammates to ask for help in the election campaign. He is also seen with two Barcelona legends, Andres Iniestan and Carles Puyolin.

The legendary goalkeeper Casillas had been captain of the Spanish national team in two European Championships in 2008 and 2012, as well as in the 2020 World Cup.

Spanish daily Marca conducted a poll asking “Would Casillas be a good president of the Spanish Federation?” 93 percent of voters believe he would be eligible for the post.

In another poll where fans were asked whether they would vote for Casillas or Rubiales, 94 percent chose Casillas.

The only problem may be Casillas’ past with Real Madrid, as rival clubs may insist he will not be able to do the job in a neutral way, without being influenced by Los Blancos.

Casillas doesn’t just have fan support. The president of the Spanish Football Association, David Aganzo, has said Casillas would be a wonderful president for the Federation.
