How can Liverpool be eliminated tonight from the Champions League?

Liverpool have been impressive in this Premier League season, but their Champions League performance is in jeopardy this week, when Jurgen Klopp’s side will play their final group stage match.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp travels to Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena on Tuesday, aware that defeat can bring them elimination from the race they had won six months ago.

Liverpool are currently at the top of Group D, with one point more than Napoli in second place and three more than Tuesday’s opponent Salzburg. Genku ranks at the bottom of the group, with a point won by five games so far.

The Reds have lost just two points out of a possible 48 in the Premier League this season, but have lost five of 15 in the Champions League, due to a defeat against Napoli at the start of the campaign and a draw with the same team at Anfield.

Liverpool are now guaranteed qualification if they manage to avoid defeat tonight at Red Bull Arena. However, a defeat would cause them to be eliminated from the prestigious race, with the exception of two scenarios that are unlikely to happen.

Even if he loses tonight, Liverpool will qualify if they manage to score four or more goals in this match against Salzburg or if Napoli loses at home against Genk in the next match.

But if Liverpool lose tonight and fail to score four or more goals, Napoli will need just a draw to eliminate Klopp’s sons from the race. With these results, Group D would qualify Naples and Salzburg.

If this happens then Liverpool will become the first Champions League winner to be eliminated since the group stage of this tournament since Chelsea in the 2012/13 season.
