Juve legend, Del Piero also criticizes Ronaldo for his action against Serbia
Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo for throwing the captain’s ribbon on the ground, in protest against the referee in a controversial Portugal draw against Serbia on Saturday.
Dutch referee Danny Makkelie apologized on Monday for denying Ronaldo and Portugal the winning goal in a controversial 2-2 draw with Serbia on Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.
Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic tried to clear the ball from Ronaldo, but despite his best efforts, the ball crossed the goal line.
In the absence of the assistant referee (VAR) video and gate line technology, McKelley ordered the game to continue, angering Ronaldo with teammates.
The Juventus striker was punished with a yellow card for protesting before throwing the angry captain’s ribbon on the ground and leaving the field before the match was over.
This caused Ronaldo to receive a lot of criticism, including in his own country Portugal, for the unacceptable action.
The same was said by the former Juventus star, who said that Ronaldo exaggerated with that action.
“It was an overreaction to someone who is the team captain and represents an iconic figure like himself. Throwing the tape was superfluous. I also understand the moment, the importance of the match and the personal ambition he puts into everything he does.” said Del Piero.
