Liverpool handed injury boost as Van Dijk and Wijnaldum train ahead of Club World Cup final
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed the return of Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum in training sessions with the squad ahead of the World Cup final against Flamengo.
Dutch midfielder Virgil van Dijk, who has played every minute of this Premier League season, was ill the day before the semifinal match against Monterrey and missed the one that Liverpool won 2-1.
Since Joe Gomez is the only other quarterback from the first team, Jordan Henderson played on the defensive line with his English teammate, despite being a midfielder.
However, the Dutchman managed to join the Liverpool squad for Friday’s training session before the final on Saturday at 6:30 pm. Part of this training was also Georginio Wijnaldum, who was injured during the match against Watford.
“We will see. Virg was part of the training today, and Ginn also held a training session today. We’ll see what the situation will look like in the end. We have no other concerns about injuries,” Klopp said.
“As you can imagine, we played Wednesday night and now it’s Friday, so we have to use it every hour to recover players and things like that. We did that and now we’ll see who can play tomorrow.”
