Haaland has been a sensation this season with Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Championship and the Champions League.
Meanwhile, United are looking for a striker as they are having problems this season at this stage.
And, the 19-year-old could be the ideal, long-term solution for the English giant.
Another option is for the Old Trafford club to buy Haaland in January and loan him to Salzburg by the end of the season.
The idea is for United to reserve the services of a player who is also wanted by other major European clubs.
