The famous Maracana Stadium will be named after the legend Pele
The deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the state of Rio de Janeiro approved in an emergency, the draft law for changing the official name of the stadium “Maracana” from “Mário Filho” to “Edson Arantes do Nascimento – Rei Pele”.
The bill needs the approval of incumbent Governor Claudio Castro to become law.
Andrè Ceciliano, a member of the Rio Legislative Assembly, stated: “Mário Filho was an extremely active journalist in the sports sector. Pele was the best player of all time on the planet. He has represented Brazil. I have no doubt that Maracana will continue to be called the same.”
