Torreira: I will no longer play in Europe, I want to stay close to my family

After 8 seasons at various European clubs, Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has decided to return to Latin America and has made his wish clear in an interview with Spanish media.

The 26-year-old footballer transferred last summer at Atletico Madrid, but the death of his mother a few days ago from the coronavirus seems to have taken away his desire to continue playing at high levels in Europe.

“When my mother died, I told my manager I wanted to play for Boca Juniors. I do not want to stay in Europe anymore. Money makes you happy for a moment, but it’s not everything and I think the time has come to be close to my family. I want to play for Boca and I will insist that my wish come true starting next season, because only then will I be able to stay close to my family,” Torreira declared.

The midfielder transferred to Italy in the summer of 2013 to play first with the youth and then with the first team of Pescara. He had the explosion in Serie A in the period 2016-2018 with the Sampdoria jersey, while then he transferred to Arsenal where he stayed until last summer.
