‘We’ll eliminate Liverpool!’ – Real Madrid boss Zidane jokes ahead of Champions League draw
Zinedine Zidane scoffed at reporters saying the Real Madrid team would have no problem defeating the reigning Champions League champions Liverpool in the 1/8 final.
The La Liga giants had secured the qualification for the Champions League knockout stage prior to their 3-1 win against Club Brugge on Wednesday and now the focus will be on the draw for the next round on Monday.
Real Madrid closed the group stage in Group A’s second position, five points behind Paris Saint-Germain, meaning that the draw will line up the Madrilen against another group winner, including the Premier League leader, Liverpool.
When asked if Jurgen Klopp’s squad were to be defeated in the Champions League, Zidane smiled and said, “If we play against Liverpool, we will eliminate them.”
Then, with a smile removed from his face, Zidane added: “There is nothing we can do for the lot.”
“We are happy with the win and the way we played. We have had difficulties in our game since playing with five defenders and today the team played with four. It took 10-15 minutes to adjust, but the second part was better in every respect.”
