Wenger calls PSG players stupid, after the loss against Man City

Arsene Wenger called the Paris Saint-Germain players stupid for, as he said, the aggressive and emotional game that cost them the defeat against Manchester City in the first semifinal between them in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Marquinhos put PSG ahead early in the first half, but City improved significantly in the second half and equalized through Kevin De Bruyne, whose cross stunned everyone, including goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Riyad Mahrez then used a space in the PSG wall to penetrate the ball from the free kick beyond Navas, giving City a 2-1 lead before the return match next week.

PSG were left with 10 players on the field in the second half, as well, after Idrissa Gueye was sent off directly with a red card for a dirty intervention against Ilkay Gundogan.

And Wenger, the former Arsenal coach, believes PSG’s complete failure in the second half was due to a lack of discipline.

“Why does a player lay on the field if the other players on the wall open the wall? I think the second goal is not at all acceptable at this level,” said Wenger.

“It is not the first time you see the players turning their backs on the wall. City took advantage of that.”

Wenger added: “In the second half, PSG was provocative, not more progressive. After the score 1: 1 they completely failed. They became aggressive and emotional in a way I would call stupid.”
