Atletico Madrid is also stopped by Betis, the La Liga title race more open than ever
Atletico Madrid has taken another step back in the fight for the title in La Liga, after being stopped with a 1: 1 draw by Real Betis on Sunday on the road, making the three-way race for the title more open than ever before.
Yannick Carrasco gave Atletico the lead early in the first half, before Cristian Tello equalized twenty minutes later to give Betis a point at the Benito Villamarini Stadium in Seville.
This draw of Diego Simeone’s team, the third in the last six games, means that Atletico returns to the first place with 60 points, but now only one more than Real Madrid and two more than Barcelona, ??eight games until the end of championship.
Betis remain on the rails to qualify for the Europa League, as they are ranked sixth with 47 points, as much as Real Socidedad in fifth place and one more than Villarreal.
It was Atletico’s second winless game since losing to Sevilla in last week’s game.
The meeting at Villamarin was almost equal, although Altetico could have won it in the final moments.
After a penetration by Angel Correa, Carrasco used the confusion in the home defense to score from close range in the 5th minute.
Tello, the promising former Barcelona striker, equalized just 15 minutes later when he scored after a cross by Alex Moreno.
Atletico did more in the second half and could have won the meeting if Correa had used one of the two golden opportunities in extra time.
Claudio Bravo denied him the goal on both occasions, expecting his sluggish shots from close range.
Atletico hosts Eibar in the next match, while Betis visits Valencia.
