La Liga
Atletico Madrid is defeated by Sevilla
Atletico Madrid were beaten by Sevilla on Sunday, taking another negative step in the title fight, allowing Barcelona to get closer to just one point on Monday night.
Marcos Acuna scored what was the only and winning goal for Sevilla in a very energetic match in Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Moreover, this was the first goal of the Argentine defender for Sevilla.
Sevilla had missed an ideal opportunity to take the lead early in the match after Lucas Ocampos’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
The leader was pleased to retreat into the defensive line and play with the counterattack, but his defense was broken twenty minutes before the end, when Acuna scored with a header from close range after a cross from Jesus Navas.
Atletico had two golden chances to avoid defeat until the end, first in about a quarter of a game before the end, when Mario Hermoso shot high over the gate.
Perhaps the best chance of the visitors was in the 90th minute, when goalkeeper Bono made a reception blocking Angel Correa’s shot from close range.
This was the third game in the last five that Atletico lost points, having drawn with Real Madrid and Getafe in advance, giving Barcelona and Real Madrid the opportunity to seriously enter the title race.
Diego Simeone’s side continue to lead with 66 points after 29 games, but now three less than Real Madrid in second place and four less than Barcelona in third place.
Barcelona will be close to just one point if they win against Real Valladolid tomorrow night in the last duel this week at the Camp Nou.
For Sevilla, this victory was great, not because it was an honor for Barca and Real, but because it shields them fourth place in La Liga nine games before the end of the season.
Sevilla now has 58 points in fourth place, 12 more than Real Betis in fifth place.
