Bayern Munich taught Chelsea a harsh lesson, admits Lampard

Chelsea coach Frank Lampard wants his team to learn from Tuesday’s defeat against Bayern Munich to the level of play they need to play in the Champions League knockout stage.

Chelsea suffered a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of the 1/8 of the Champions League final against Germany’s reigning champion on Tuesday, due to two goals by Serge Gnabryt and a goal by Robert Lewandowski at Stamford Bridge.

The Londoners had some periods when they tried to pressure, but rarely tested goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Marcos Alonso was booked for red card after a VAR misconduct intervention.

Chelsea coach Lampard acknowledged that his team could learn a lot from that match and said they would have to use this victory in a positive way to understand the level they need to play in the Champions League.

“This is football of this level. Bayern Munich’s level was fantastic, they have a really good team, I was aware of that, “Lampard said at the post-match press conference.

“Unless we manage to do everything perfectly, we will find it very difficult. We didn’t do everything right today. They had no confidence when we had the ball, which was the biggest disappointment for me.”

“A difficult lesson, a reality for the level we want to reach – this is Champions League football. As a club we haven’t been in the knockout phase for several years and that’s the reality of what to do.
