Benevento shocks Juventus, dims their hopes for the title
Benevento has caused great shock in Serie A, after beating the reigning champions, Juventus, significantly reducing their chances of defending the title.
Adolfo Gaich scored the only goal and what was the historic three-point goal for Benevento at the Allianz Stadium, in its bid to survive in the Italian elite league on Sunday.
This was the first victory after 11 games in Serie A for Benevento, or since January 6.
As a result of this defeat, which is the fourth for Andrea Pirlo’s team this season, the whites remain at the figure of 55 points, 10 away from the leader Inter, 11 games before the end of the 2020/21 season.
In a match completely dominated by Juve, as expected, the visitors scored the goal of the unexpected triumph from a single kick they had in the gate frame of Wojciech Szczesny.
Benevento did not create the three-point goal themselves, as Gaich scored only thanks to the help of Arthur, who lost the ball in his own area, allowing Gaich to steal it and beat Szczesny in the 69th minute.
Juventus now risks remaining in the fight for only one trophy this season, after being eliminated from the Champions League last week.
Meanwhile, Benevento makes an important step to survival with this victory in the elite.
Benevento goes to the 29-point quota now in 16th position, seven points away from relegation zone.
