City unveil Aguero statue on 10th anniversary of dramatic title-clincher
One of the most famous moments in Premier League history has been immortalized outside the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
To mark the 10-year anniversary of Sergio Aguero’s title-clinching goal against Queens Park Rangers in 2012, Manchester City unveiled a statue of the Argentine striker celebrating his dramatic strike.
“Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving,” Aguero said.
“In those 10 years, I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.
“I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”
The statue, sculpted by U.S.-based Scottish artist Andy Scott, portrays the moment Aguero took off his shirt in celebration.
Aguero’s goal three minutes into stoppage time against QPR concluded Manchester City’s dramatic comeback and sealed the club’s first-ever Premier League title. City trailed 2-1 on the final day of the season – with rivals Manchester United poised to lift the title – before roaring back to win 3-2 and capture their first top-division trophy since 1968.
Aguero joins Vincent Kompany and David Silva to complete the triumvirate of Manchester City icons honored with statues outside the team’s stadium.
