FC Barcelona Officially Announce Quique Setien As New Head Coach

Ernesto Valverde has parted ways with Barcelona and Quique Setien is Lionel Messi’s new head coach.

The former Real Betis coach has been linked with Blaugrana several times in recent years as he has the same football philosophy as the Catalan squad.

“Barcelona and Quique Setien have reached an agreement to be the first team coach by June 30, 2022,” the club’s official statement reads.

Setien has expressed his admiration for what Barcelona presents, focusing on their attacking style in football.

His career as a coach began in 2001 at Racing Santander, where he led the La Liga promotion squad.

From there he went to Polly Ejido and then coached Equatorial Guinea, before taking over the wheel of the Legrones in 2007.

He stayed there for a year, before joining Lugo for six seasons, helping them reach the second Spanish league.

From 2015 he was the first coach in La Liga since moving to Las Palmas, then two years coaching Betis.

In his first season for the Andalusian squad he qualified for the Europa League and reached the Copa del Rey semifinals in the second year. After that, relations with the board deteriorated and he terminated the contract, despite having three years of agreement.
