Jürgen Klopp: It’s in our gift to view pressure as a positive
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp claims his team’s players are not trying to find excuses for a busy match schedule or failures but want to use that pressure as an additional opportunity to write the story.
The Reds won the Champions League and the Club World Cup in 2019, ending a long absence of trophies, and now look set to win their first Premier League title this season.
These glorious triumphs have come at the expense of a tighter schedule than usual, as Liverpool were forced to play with the youth team in their defeat to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup in order to be able to play in the World Cup for Clubs in Qatar earlier this month.
Speaking ahead of his team’s final game this year against the Wolves at Anfield, Klopp says his team is ready for the challenges ahead.
“This group of players know that we set our own agenda and conditions. They know that we have the capacity to decide whether to embark on a tired game or with a fresh body and mind. It’s a choice we make because we have the power to decide for ourselves on our own,” Klopp said.
“I’m not stupid and I know we are facing a very, very big test in this period. But this is the Premier League and our goal is to be the most successful team in it,” he added.
“Talking about this topic is different than finding excuses. These players have no culture of reasoning. We will have failures, we will lose matches, of course yes. But we will never seek to find external factors to explain failure, no matter how legitimate they may seem,” he said.
