Klopp confirms, Liverpool will be without Wijnaldum for Club World Cup semi-final
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Georginio Wijnaldum will miss Liverpool’s semifinal against Monterrey in the Club World Cup on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old midfielder was injured during the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Anfield at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Wijnaldum was seen touching his leg muscles as he walked out of the playing field to be replaced by Andrew Robertson. However, he was named in Kloppin’s squad for the first match in Qatar.
Since then, Liverpool have learned that the Dutchman’s injury is not very serious and that he will not be missed for long. But Klopp has announced that Wijnaldum will not recover in time for tomorrow’s match against the Mexican club.
“Ginny doesn’t have the injury as serious as we thought at first, so he is here doing the first exercises to heal and then we have to see what we need to do,” Klopp said.
“We will see his recovery process day by day, but he will not be involved in tomorrow’s game.”
Liverpool will open the tournament with a face-off against Monterrey on December 18 in the semi-finals, with either Flamengo as the winner of the Copa Libertadores or Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the final.
