Mbappe and Haaland reveal the names of the strongest opponents in their careers so far

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland have opened up about the toughest opponents they have faced so far in their respective careers.

Both Haaland and Mbappe have been described as the ‘heirs of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’ after emerging as two of Europe’s fastest-growing stars.

Haaland, 20 year-old, has revealed that his strongest opponent was Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk, whom he described as an “incredible player”.

“Virgil van Dijk. He is so good. He is powerful, fast, possesses all qualities. He is an incredible player.” Haaland told ESPN.

Haaland scored against Liverpool during RB Salzburg’s 4-3 defeat at Anfield in the 2019 Champions League, but failed to find the net during the Reds’ 2-0 victory in Austria.

Mbappe, on the other hand, chose Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon as the toughest opponent in his career.

The winner of the French World Cup came out against Buffon during the semi-final match of Monaco and Juventus in the 2017 Champions League, where the Italians won the first match 2-0.

Mbappe scored in the return match at Juventus Stadium, but Mario Mandzukic and Dani Alves would sign a 2-1 victory at the Old Lady.

When asked about his strongest opponent, the France player simply said: “Gianluigi Buffon”.

Buffon later played for PSG alongside Mbappe and spoke several times about the French striker’s incredible talent.

Douglas Costa is expected to complete his move to Gremio within 48 hours, said the vice-president of the Brazilian club.

The 30-year-old joined Bayern Munich on loan from Juventus this October, but the Bavarians had informed the Serie A giants that they would not buy the player.

The Brazilian is now expected to return to his former club Gremio on a free transfer.

“Negotiations are underway. Juventus have officially authorized us to make a deal with the player,” Gremio vice-president Marcos Herrmann told Globo Esporte.

“We are waiting for the documentation, which should arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday, and there is enough time to register the player before the deadline. We are optimistic.”

Douglas Costa’s contract with Juventus expires in 2022, but the Bianconeri will end the deal with the Brazilian winger a year ago.
