Real Madrid stops Atletico Madrid, the title race in La Liga is now open
Real Madrid stopped the leader Atletico Madrid with a 1: 1 draw thanks to a late goal by Karim Benzema, making the title race in La Liga even more open now.
Luis Suarez gave Atletico the lead early in the first half at Wanda Metropolitano, however Benzema avoided the loss to Real Madrid and did not allow the rival and leader to break away even more in the title race by scoring the equalizer in the final moments on Sunday.
Atletico remains the leader now with 59 points, three more than Barcelona in second place and five more than Real in third place.
Diego Simeone’s team, however, has played one game less than its two rivals and consequently has the opportunity to increase its lead over them at the top of La Liga even more.
Zinedine Zidane’s team controlled the ball most of the time and were the more demanding than the locals, who implemented defensive play as expected.
But it was Atletico who scored first, when Marcus Llorente assisted on Suarez who defeated Thibaut Courtois with a masterful shot after a typical local counterattack in the 15th minute.
Atletico were able to double the lead and score even more almost every time they came out against the attack, but the Belgian goalkeeper made some crucial expectations to Suarez and Llorente to keep Real in the game.
However, after many attempts, Benzema managed to equalize the score in the 88th minute, after a fantastic combination with Casemiro. Previously, Oblak had denied the goal to the Frenchman expecting his two consecutive shots from close range.
